The school made and defend the decision based on students' complaints about the professor's "dismissiveness, unresponsiveness, condescension and opacity about grading."

For the professor's part, he observed a decline in student ability in learning and the trend of lowering academic standards by universities trying to pander those paying tuition bills.

The incident begs a question that is relevant to tertiary education in China. Should most of the high school graduates be admitted to universities as now they do? Or should the academic rigor be held even though that means some students would be left behind if they don't make the cut.
